All the sites i have read regarding Gymnopilus just say widely distributed. i was wondering if there are any that grow in British Columbia Canada? the following 2 species are what im interested in.

Gymnopilus luteofolius-i read it was found in Washington, so im assuming it could at least be cultivated outdoors here?
and
Gymnopilus spectabilis

im on Vancouver Island if i may be so specific 8)

thanks for any help.

If you look in our or gallery you'll find pictures of Gymnopilus ventricosus which were found in victoria.

Gymnopilus ventricosus are almost identicle to Gymnopilus spectabilis....so if they can be found here, Gym sp should also found here. just keep chaecking those stumps

All I have to say is look hard enough and you should find them . I went on a hunt in the Kootenays this fall and came across a nice patch of spectabilis growing from a nice mossy fallen birch tree. It was my lucky day actually, just a few meters away was a good patch white chanterells too, but anyway, I ramble. Yes there is a good number of gyms in B.C., you just gotta be patient and find em. Good luck bro.

Hey folks,

Thought I'd join in this discussion...

Gymnopilus luteofolius has been reportedly collected by Stamets from Cortes Island, BC. It is said to be weakly to moderatley active.

CaptainHappy- were you postive about your I.D. on G. spectabilis from the Kootenays? I wonder if it was Armillaria mellea? They look similar and the latter is commonly found on birch in that area, whereas G. spectabilis has yet to be confirmed. White chanterelles too, sounds like you were in the Nakusp area?

Awesome, Psynaut.
How do you usually go about identifying your gym findings? Do you have a microscope?
