I was recently introduced to Hen of the Woods (and mushrooming in general) by a client of mine and after eating the sample of the mushroom last Tuesday I became a dedicated (novice) mushroom hunter and enthusiast.
After spending hours online researching and learning and some time in local woodlands where I have hiked for years, I have been fairly successful in locating this mushroom (and eating it).
My question is: Are these mushrooms found more frequently around older or distressed Oak trees? Despite the fact that most of what I've read says that they grow on or around "deciduous" trees in general, I seem to have found them exclusively near Oak trees.
In fact, the four that I found were in relatively close proximity to water too.
I'd appreciate any suggestions and would be willing to share any of my limited experience.
