As a new hunter, I am anxious to find some nice specimens (to photograph) and have little knowledge of where to look. My best finds (so far) have been on nature trails, usually on downed logs in places that have no direct sunlight. Obviously, diff. species will have favorite resident neighborhoods, and I'm wondering what sorts of areas I might be checking for fungi. Most of the planned trails I travel discourage ppl from wandering off the trail, but of course off-road is where all the action is.

If anybody has suggestions, I'm all ears. When I find some, then I'll be all eyes.

I live in Michigan, not far from Detroit, which is across the river from Windsor, Ontario. (I mention that as I have noticed a number of Canadian hunters here.)

Thanks.

Best times to look ar spring and fall. You should check areas such as parks, woods, grassy areas, farm land, and anything else you can think of that has similar terrain. The more shade and moisture, the better. It's best to go out a day or two after a good rain.
