Someone over at sporelab posted this & was curious about what species.

I thought it may have been Phaeolus schweinitzii but the habitat doesn't quite jive. Another member thinks it may be Ganoderma curtsii.

Thats a tough one.. Nothing really comes to mind, I've spent all of my time learning about gilled and pore/tube mushrooms.
Interesting link though, I've never seen those forums.

Ive seen lots of these in indiana. I just sort lump all of the brownish crispy little shelflike polypores as turkey tails and leave it at that. ( is that snow on the log ?)

Well turkey tails tend to be much brighter and have a different overall shape, those guys look a little too dark. They also may be too young to tell or even dead. Some of those bracket species can die in the fall and the fruit body will remain there all winter until the following summer. Other little molds and fungi can then grow out of the older, dead fruit body making IDs even harder.
