I found a nice healthy group of the Velvet foot fungus...a wild version of the Enokie fungus. and I am currently growing spores and making clones from tissue samples of it to infect elm logs.

I will infect one end of the log with the wild strain and the other end with the clone I made from the store bought mushroom.
and then a FIGHT TO THE DEATH !!!
Who will win the log? who will be more productive?

I casted my vote for the wilders, just for the heck of it. But, I'd have to say that the store bought clone, coming from a strain that has been geared for results will probably win. Its a interesting experiment to try. Keep us posted.

Wild for me. My guess is that the wild one is tougher than the commercial version, being exposed to more contaminants & a wider range of nutrients than the one in a controlled environment.

I think the wild will win also.Most likely the wild has a broader immune system.The store bought was probably cloned from a fruit . It is hard to start from spores and predict the fruiting ability.From spores numerous pheno types .From clone exact genetics as the doner .Geese I am so full of hooey.Please udate progress.

You'll have to be patient...it was a clone from a fruitbody for the domestic and a multispore from the wild one...both are still growing into thier dishes and thew will get into the same log.
Personally I bet they will look the same...I can't see them being so different that they even have a slight difference.the domestic were white and leggy with tiny caps but that was because of the growing environment...the wild ones were dark capped and stocky.

I'm not sure.
I made a clone before I had a positive identification on the wild enokie and by the time it was identified it was a little past it's prime.
I never tried the domestic one on it's own,I only had three very small specimens to work with.not enough to fry up.

You probably won't see much for quite a while, maybe not till next summer. If anything, one end might fruit before the other. I started my Shitake logs back in May & am not expecting fruit till the spring.

Yeah...I got a few Shitakie logs outside eating log.I don't expect to see many log shrooms for many months.
