I don't think that the wavy gills and fluted margin are necessarily common to this (mysterious) species of mushroom. It is a mutation to the extreme! So if anyone finds a mushroom that fits my description (except for the wavy/fluting part) then it may be the proper ID.

I'd have to say it looks like whatever it is it has suffered from a dried cap at some point.that caused the mushroom to crack but it kept growing and the cap couldn't keep up.that may cause the wavy gills as well.
without the wavy gills and a smooth cap it would look like a field mushroom I think.
just my .02

Your thoughts on my mushroom having experienced some dryness are interesting and may even be accurate. Something had to have caused the mutation...
However the Field or Meadow Mushroom has a veil, purplish/chocolate-brown spores, pink gills, and grows in the open, all features that don't fit my "Mysterious Wild Mushroom".
Does anyone have some detailed information on the Grayish Inocybe? In particular the colour of the spore print, habitat, and photos...
Thanks!

I've looked through my half a dozen books and so far it has drawn a blank. A feature on some fungi are to crack when they are mature- this one could well have dried. Talking about mutations, I came across a Hydnum Rufescens with a aborted cap on top of its cap!

It certainly looked cracked, like the inner meat was shyly exposed, and almost vulnerable!
Mushroom mutations are opening up a whole new world for this fungiphile...what a trip!
