Also we have displays, speakers, slide shows, books and roving experts on cultivation, preservation, gourmet cooking, medicinal use, hunting, ecology, and cultural use.  Bring your own specimens for identification!

For Immediate Release: 34rd Annual VMS Mushroom Show at VanDusen Gardens

Mushrooms Inspire: Traditionally mushrooms always held a touch of the fantastic; after all they were seen to magically spring up overnight - from nowhere (had the fairies been dancing again?). The study of their complex life cycles and interactions with other living organisms could be understood with the coming of microscopes and systematic science. But science has only made them more fantastic: fungi that shoot out their spores like cannons, fungi that trap minute worms with lassoes, fungi that inhabit caterpillars, all these and many other wonders were discovered.

Fungi are fantastically small and big, from spores floating in the air too small for the eye to see to mycelial mats that cover hectares. Fungi have also played fantastic roles in medicine, penicillin and cyclosporine for example. Fungi play a role in food too, from the everyday staples such as bread and wine to the fantastically expensive delight of gourmet truffles. And, of course, no illustrator of children’s books overlooks the red and white spotted toadstool, Amanita muscaria, which adds the final touch of fantasy to wonderful woodland adventures.

The 34rd Annual VMS Mushroom Show will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2013 in the Floral Hall at VanDusen Botanical Garden, 5251 Oak Street (Oak & 37th Avenue). Doors open from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is $3.00 per adult (children under 12 free) and parking is free.

At the centre of the show is a display of the fungi of southwestern B.C., freshly gathered and clearly identified. Another display will feature edible mushrooms juxtaposed with poisonous look-alikes. Choice edibles, such as chanterelles, pine mushrooms, and many more, will be on view.

Mushrooms will be celebrated in many ways. A chef will demonstrate the preparation of gourmet delicacies, and will offer taste samples. Our hugely popular visual presentations by mushroom experts will be held during the show; topics include “a tour of the mushroom kingdom” and “an introduction to edible and toxic fungi.”  Books for sale will include some of the best available field guides for this area.

The members of the public are invited to bring their own mushroom specimens for identification by experts. This is an opportunity for those with a deeper interest to meet other mushroom enthusiasts and to find out about the activities of the mycological society.

The Vancouver Mycological Society aims to increase knowledge and awareness of fungi, to protect significant fungal environments, and to educate the public about safe mushrooming practices.
