Several amanitas are called destroying angels: A. verna has smoth stalk and occurs April-June in Pacific NW.

White mushroom with flaring to ragged ring on stalk: large. Saclike c-up about base. Cap: 2-5" (5-12.5 cm) wide; convex to flat with central swelling, or nearly flat; margin smooth; tacky when wet, smooth, dull to shiny white, may discolor at center of cap with age. Gills: free or attached, close, narrow to moderately broad, white. Stalk: 3-8" (7.5-20 cm) long, (0.5-2 cm) thick, sometimes enlarging downward to basal bulb; cottony to somewhat shaggy, white; with ring and sheathing cup. Veils: universal veil white; leaving large, membranous, persistent, saclike cup with free limb. Partial veil membranous, white; leaving large, pendant, often torn ring on upper stalk. Spores: 9-11 X 7-9 u; nearly round to round, smooth, colorless, amyloid Spore print white. |
