I see those little white plants all over the place in my woods. I thought they were a type of fungus also when I first saw them some years ago.. It's a common mustake. They share the same sort of habitat - moist and shady places.

dutchmens pipe usually refers to a VERY pretty vine that has large purple flowers....somewhat shaped like a pipe i suppose? Aristolochia tomentosa.

not sure where they are native but i have seen tehm growing here in gardens on southern vancouver island. fairly hardy.


anyway i also find teh reddy ones somtimes. teh ones here are called canysticks or somthing. red and white stripes. they are a very good sign as tehy only appear in older more healthy ecosystems....good places to find chants i find.

Anyway, have you seen "Princess Mononoke"? I ask this because those plants reminded me some characters that appeard in this movie. They are called "The Kodama" and they are also a sign that the forest is healthy
