TOPIC: Identification:

Identification: 5 years, 2 months ago #965

alright, I have some pics of these, but not with me at the moment. i'll do my best in describing them. i live in central texas on a farm where we have cattle. the cattle mainly graze other than the occasional little pellet treat. the mushrooms i'm finding are growing directly in the dung. the dung is usually dried, almost compost like. the mushrooms grow in little groups, but not clustered thouroughly. they are fairly tall (3"), the caps are an off white, and are usually dome shaped...nearly hemispherical. they are extremely sticky/moist when young. the gills are dark colored/brown/grey by the time the sun comes out, otherwise they are a reddish white/brown. the gills become ashy with age. the stem in slender, and tubular...kind of fibrous. there is no bluing/bruising when handled. when matured, the caps flatten out slightly and the middle changes to a little darker shade of the cap's original color (almost pearl/vanilla colored). i'll post some pics soon, but for now - anyone want to take a stab at it?

ok, so i'm having no luck identifying or finding anymore of the previously posted mushrooms. however, i have been finding more and more puffball type mushrooms and i'd love for someone to identify these... ; [/img][/b]

That is a Lepiota. A spore print should be made (on white paper) - it should come out white. When you split the stem lengthwise, what color does it turn right away? How big across is the cap?

There are edible Lepiota species that look like that, but the genus also has some species that are deadly.

these certain ones aer white/grey when you open them...they're stems are tubelike almost. there are some other puffballs around that have a yellow, spongey center. these however are uniform, and don't really changed when handled.
